Dementia Action Week: Creating a Dementia-Friendly Future
Dementia Action Week (16 - 22 September 2024) is a national campaign by Dementia Australia to raise awareness and challenge widespread misconceptions about dementia. Dementia currently affects nearly half a million Australians, and with the nation's ageing population, this number is projected to more than double in the next 40 years.
Assistive Technology: Enhancing Quality of Life
Assistive technology can play a key role in extending independence, improving safety, and supporting day-to-day tasks. Smart home devices that remind users to take medication or alert caregivers to potential hazards can significantly improve quality of life. By reducing the reliance on others for daily tasks, individuals with dementia retain a sense of dignity and self-worth.
Building Dementia-Friendly Communities
Everyone from local businesses to community groups has a role to play in fostering environments where individuals with dementia can thrive. Community-centred technology is essential to this inclusivity. Technological innovations designed explicitly for caregivers, including devices that monitor health, wearable technology that tracks location, and telehealth services, can provide vital relief.
