How do I insert a SIM card in the CareHub?
Last updated 4 August 2026
The CareHub uses Wi-Fi by default for internet, with a built-in 4G SIM as backup. For households without reliable Wi-Fi but good mobile coverage, the CareHub can run primarily on a SIM card. This article covers how to insert a SIM card if needed. Most households don't need to do this themselves — it's normally handled by Lumin during setup. But occasionally a SIM swap is needed (network change, replacement SIM), and here's how it works.
Before you start
- Use a micro-SIM. The CareHub's SIM slot is sized for micro-SIM. If your SIM is a different size, your provider can supply a micro-SIM, or use a SIM adapter.
- Power off the CareHub first. Press and hold the power button at the back, choose Power Off, and wait for the screen to go dark.
- Have something thin to hand — the edge of a credit card or a paperclip can help slot the SIM in firmly.
Inserting the SIM
- Look on the back of the CareHub for the SIM card slot. It's clearly marked with a SIM icon and the word "SIM", so you don't need to count slots or memorise positions — just look for the label.
- Insert the SIM with the gold-coloured contacts facing out (away from the body of the device).
- Push the SIM in until you feel a small click. Use the edge of a credit card if needed to press it in firmly.
- Turn the CareHub back on (plug in power; it'll boot automatically).
Checking it worked
Once the SIM is inserted and the CareHub is back on, the simplest check is the red offline banner:
- No banner — the CareHub has a connection. That's all most people need to know.
- Banner still showing — there's no connection yet. See "If it's not working" below. The banner confirms whether the CareHub is connected, not how. If you also need to know which connection is in use, that detail sits in Settings, and deeper detail in System Settings behind the PIN. That's advanced territory and rarely necessary — for almost everyone, connected is connected. If you want a second check, try something that needs data, like the radio.
For village staff and internal staff only: APN configuration
The steps below are advanced and sit behind the device PIN. They are not for residents or family members. If you are a resident or family member reading this, stop here and contact Lumin Support. If the offline banner won't clear, the SIM's network settings may need setting — the access point name (APN) for the carrier:
- Press and hold the power button until the options appear, then tap Settings.
- Tap System Settings and enter the PIN (8888 by default).
- Tap More → Mobile networks → Access point names.
- Select the entry for the carrier in use (for example Optus or Telstra), or add one with the APN string the carrier supplies.
- Confirm mobile data is enabled.
- Return to the home screen and check the offline banner has cleared. Exact menu labels and paths vary by hardware generation — the fleet spans several Android versions. If the menus don't match, or the banner still won't clear, contact Lumin Support rather than experimenting further in Android's settings.
If it's not working
- Offline banner won't clear. The SIM may not be activated by your carrier, may have no coverage at your location, or may need its network settings (APN) configured. Residents and family members should contact Lumin Support. Village and internal staff can follow the APN steps above.
- SIM not recognised. Make sure the SIM is correctly inserted (contacts out) and pushed in firmly. Try removing and re-inserting.
- PIN. The PIN for System Settings is 8888 by default. If you've changed it and forgotten, contact Lumin Support. If you're not sure or it's still not working, contact Lumin Support — we can walk you through it over the phone, or in some cases handle it remotely.
