What happens when Lumin is deployed at a village?

    Last updated 28 July 2026

Deploying Lumin in a retirement village is more than handing out devices. Lumin works with the village across several weeks to set up the platform, train staff, equip residents, and lay foundations for the community to use Lumin meaningfully. This article covers what happens during deployment — useful for village staff who are about to begin, and for residents who'd like to know what to expect.

    Before deployment day

Lumin works with the village to gather what's needed for the platform setup:

    • Resident list — names, dwellings, basic contact details
    • Village content — the Residents Handbook, key contacts, facilities information, calendar of events
    • Branding — village name, logo, colour preferences
    • Configuration — which modules the village wants enabled (community messaging, broadcasts, calendar, bookings, maintenance requests, etc.)
    • Network details — Wi-Fi setup at the village, any IT considerations Lumin uses this to pre-populate the Portal so it's already shaped to the village before any device arrives. By the time deployment day comes, much of the work is already done.

    Deployment day(s)

Devices are pre-configured at the Lumin office before they ship — each one personalised to the resident it'll go to. On deployment day, Lumin's team (or a partner installer) attends the village to:

    • Install each CareHub in the resident's dwelling
    • Set up Wi-Fi connection and test connectivity
    • Walk each resident through using their device — at their pace
    • Pair any peripherals (pendants, sensors)
    • Sign each resident off on the basics For larger villages, this can span several days or weeks, with deployment scheduled in waves so residents aren't all set up at once.

    The first 4 weeks

The 4 weeks after deployment are an intensive support period. Lumin checks in regularly:

    • Daily monitoring of every device — if anything looks off (offline patterns, alerts), Lumin reaches out before the village does
    • Scheduled check-ins with village staff
    • Refresher sessions for residents who'd like more time
    • Active support for any issues — quick resolution, with the goal of getting everyone comfortable The intensity tapers down as residents become confident. By the end of the 4 weeks, the village is on its feet with the platform.

    Champions

During deployment, Lumin identifies and equips Lumin champions — residents (and sometimes staff) who are comfortable with the platform and willing to help others. Champions become the first line of help for everyday questions, with Lumin Support and the village's IT or community team as backup. The champion model means residents have peers who can help them — which is often more effective and dignifying than calling a support line for every small question. There's a separate article on the champion model.

    Ongoing service

After the intensive 4-week period, the village settles into a normal rhythm:

    • Routine change requests — content updates, new residents, configuration tweaks. The village typically requests a handful of changes each month.
    • Resident-specific support — for individual issues, residents (or their Supporters) contact Lumin Support directly.
    • Village staff use the Portal for day-to-day community management — sending messages, broadcasting, managing groups, handling maintenance.
    • Lumin monitors the platform 24/7 in the background.

    What's expected from the village

For deployment to go well, Lumin needs the village to:

    • Provide accurate resident and village content upfront
    • Be available to help during deployment day(s)
    • Identify and support the champion model
    • Maintain a single Lumin point of contact who can request changes and field village-side questions

What the village can expect from Lumin

    In return, Lumin:

    • Sets up the platform end-to-end
    • Trains staff in the Portal
    • Runs deployment day(s) and the intensive 4-week support period
    • Provides ongoing support through Lumin Support and via change requests
    • Continuously improves the platform with input from the village
