How is Lumin different in residential aged care?
Last updated 28 July 2026
Residential aged care uses the same Lumin platform as retirement villages — same CareHub, same apps, same Portal — but with a clinical care extension and some patterns adjusted for the care environment. If you're familiar with how Lumin works in a retirement village (see the related articles), most of that knowledge transfers. This article covers what's different.
What stays the same
- CareHubs in each resident's room function the same way as in a retirement village dwelling
- The Lumin Supporters App works the same for family
- The Community Management Portal is the staff tool
- Community Messages, broadcasts, events, bookings, maintenance requests all work the same way
- Privacy boundaries remain — Supporters see what they see in any other context; staff see what their role requires
What's added for aged care
- Clinical care integration. Through Lumin Connect, Lumin integrates with the facility's clinical care management software — AlayaCare, AutumnCare, and others. Events on the Lumin platform (alerts, daily check-ins, missed reminders) can flow into the clinical record; updates from the clinical system can surface on the staff side of Lumin.
- Care plan integration. A resident's care plan can be reflected in their CareHub setup — medication reminders, wellbeing checks, specific Supporter alerts, accessibility configuration.
- Higher-care interface options. OneTouch (the simplified interface for people living with dementia or significant cognitive change) is more commonly used in aged care. CareHubs can be deployed across an aged care wing with a mix of OneTouch and standard interfaces depending on each resident's needs.
- Family communication is often more critical. For aged care residents, regular contact with family may be the most meaningful daily moment. The Lumin Supporters App and the photo slideshow take on extra importance.
- Aged care–specific support model. Care staff often act as the bridge between residents and the platform — particularly for residents who can't independently navigate the CareHub. Champions are usually staff rather than residents in this setting.
What's different in practice
A few things tend to be different in day-to-day operation: Higher staff involvement. Where in a retirement village residents largely self-serve, in aged care, staff typically help residents use the platform — initiating calls, showing photos, supporting interaction with family. More structured daily rhythms. Medication reminders, daily wellbeing checks, scheduled family calls — these are part of care delivery, not just resident initiative. Coordination with clinical record. A missed medication reminder in aged care has clinical significance; in a retirement village, it might just need a chat. The integration with clinical systems means the right people see the right signals. More careful privacy considerations. Family members in aged care contexts may want more visibility (a parent with declining cognition is a deeply concerning situation). Lumin's privacy boundary remains — Supporters see what they see — but Lumin Support can talk through what's possible within that. Different funding model. Residential aged care funding (RAC) applies in Australia — distinct from Support at Home or NDIS. The facility handles funding for the Lumin component; residents and families don't usually deal with it directly.
Pilot status
Lumin's full clinical care extension is in active deployment with several aged care providers but isn't generic yet — each facility's clinical integration is scoped during onboarding. If your aged care facility is considering Lumin, contact Lumin Support to discuss what's possible and the timeline for setup.
Where this article doesn't go
- Specific clinical workflows. Each facility's clinical model is its own. Lumin integrates; it doesn't define.
- Funding rules. Residential aged care funding is complex and operator-specific. The facility's admissions and billing teams own this.
- Care planning. Lumin supports care delivery; it doesn't substitute for the clinical care plan.
