Can I use Lumin overseas?
Last updated 28 July 2026
Lumin works overseas, but with some considerations worth thinking through before you travel.
Short trips (a few weeks)
For a holiday or short stay overseas (up to a few weeks), the CareHub typically works fine if it has reliable internet at the destination.
- Pack the CareHub and its power adapter.
- Bring a plug adapter for the destination country (the CareHub power supply is universal voltage, so you only need the plug shape adapter).
- At the destination, plug in and connect to local Wi-Fi.
- The CareHub's built-in 4G SIM may not work overseas (it's an Australian or New Zealand SIM with limited roaming), so plan to rely on local Wi-Fi.
- Calls and messages work as normal once connected. Let Lumin Support know before you travel — we can confirm the destination's compatibility and address anything proactively.
Longer stays
For longer stays (months at a time, or a permanent move), the picture is more nuanced:
- Local phone numbers. Lumin can supply a local phone number in most countries so that local people can call the CareHub like a regular landline. Talk to Lumin Support about this before travel.
- Time zone considerations. Reminders and notifications run on the CareHub's configured time zone. We can adjust that during the trip.
- Service hours. Lumin's human support hours are 9am–5pm every day, including public holidays, in Australian (AEST/AEDT) and New Zealand (NZST/NZDT) time. Depending on your destination's time zone, this may mean overnight support availability. AI-assisted support remains 24/7.
- Emergency response. On Ease of Mind or Rest Assured, emergency response works differently overseas. The monitoring centre is set up for AU and NZ; for international travel, family Supporters are usually the more practical response. Talk to Lumin Support about your specific situation.
- Local regulations. Some countries have regulations about importing communication devices. Lumin Support can advise.
Permanent move overseas
If you're moving overseas permanently, Lumin can usually continue to support you, though the service may need to be re-shaped:
- Local phone number provisioning
- Time zone adjustment
- Emergency response model adjustment
- Possibly a change of plan to one that's appropriate for international use Contact Lumin Support well before the move so we can work through the details.
What to do before you travel
- Tell Lumin Support about your travel plans — destination, duration, what you'd like to use Lumin for.
- Confirm your accommodation has reliable internet. Hotels and short-term rentals usually do; rural cottages may not.
- Bring the right power adapter for the destination country.
- Adjust the time zone if it would help with reminders.
- Consider whether emergency response needs to be adjusted for the trip.
What not to do
- Don't pack the CareHub into checked luggage if you can avoid it — it's safer as carry-on.
- Don't expect the 4G SIM to work overseas — plan for Wi-Fi-only.
- Don't change Wi-Fi networks dramatically without telling Lumin — we monitor the device and can help if connection issues arise.
