How do villages connect their residents to Lumin?

    Last updated 28 July 2026

Different villages take different approaches to how widely Lumin is deployed across their resident base. This article walks through the common patterns. There's no single "right" model — the best fit depends on the village's culture, resident demographics, and what the village is trying to achieve.

    Village-wide deployment

Every resident is provisioned with a CareHub as part of moving into the village. Lumin is part of the standard offering — like a kitchen appliance, it's just there. Best for: villages where Lumin is central to the community offering, where the village wants high participation, and where the village can absorb the per-dwelling cost into its operating model. Pros:

    • Everyone is on the platform, so Community Messages, broadcasts, and events reach the whole community
    • New residents are onboarded with Lumin as part of move-in
    • Less administrative overhead managing who has it and who doesn't Cons:
    • Residents who genuinely don't want a CareHub still get one (though they can decline to use it actively)
    • Higher upfront and ongoing cost for the village

    Opt-in deployment

Lumin is offered to residents but not required. Each resident decides whether they want a CareHub, and may choose between plans or even between CareHub and the Lumin App on a smartphone. Best for: villages with diverse resident demographics, including residents who are confident with their own technology and don't need or want a CareHub. Pros:

    • Residents who want Lumin get a tailored experience
    • Avoids the cost of providing a CareHub to residents who won't use it
    • Respectful of resident autonomy and existing technology choices Cons:
    • Community Messages and broadcasts don't reach the whole community (only the residents who opted in)
    • Administrative complexity managing the active resident list
    • Newer residents may not realise Lumin is available unless actively promoted

    Hybrid model

Some residents have a CareHub (village-provided); others use the Lumin App on their own phone or tablet; some are not on the platform at all. The village runs the platform actively for those who participate, and uses other channels (paper noticeboards, email, phone trees) for those who don't. Best for: villages transitioning from a paper-based model to digital, or villages that want to offer Lumin without making it the only channel. Pros:

    • Flexibility for residents
    • Lower up-front cost than village-wide deployment Cons:
    • Multiple parallel communication channels for the same content
    • Easy for things to slip through (a resident on Lumin gets one message, while a resident off Lumin gets another, or none)
    • Doesn't fully realise the community-building potential of the platform

    Embedded in care plans

For aged care or higher-care villages, Lumin can be embedded in the resident's care plan — the CareHub is part of what each resident receives as part of admission, alongside their room and care services. Best for: residential aged care, higher-care wings within retirement villages. Pros:

    • Consistent platform across all residents in care
    • Lumin features (medication reminders, daily wellbeing checks, family communication) become part of care delivery
    • Integrates cleanly with clinical care management Cons:
    • Resident autonomy needs careful handling — even within care, residents should have a meaningful choice about how they engage
    • Coordination with funding model (residential aged care funding rather than community funding)

Which model your village is on

If you're a village staff member and unsure which model your village uses, your village's primary Lumin contact or Lumin Support can tell you. Knowing the model affects how you communicate with residents — particularly when you're sending Community Messages or broadcasting events that might or might not reach everyone.

    Moving between models

Villages don't have to lock in a model forever. It's common for villages to start with opt-in and move toward village-wide deployment as residents see what Lumin can do. Or to start with village-wide and adjust as the population's needs evolve. If your village wants to change models, contact Lumin Support — there's typically a planning conversation, then a phased transition.
