How does Lumin update its software?
Last updated 28 July 2026
Lumin's software — on the CareHub, in the Supporters App, in the Lumin App, in the Community Management Portal — is updated regularly. The updates happen in different ways depending on the surface, but all of them are designed to be invisible to users where possible.
CareHub — over-the-air (OTA) updates
CareHub software updates happen automatically, over the air, in the background. No user action required. No manual download. No disruption — updates happen during low-use periods (typically overnight) and don't interrupt anything the user is doing. No version anxiety — the CareHub is always running the current software. If an update requires a brief restart of the device, the CareHub may briefly show an "Updating..." message before continuing. This is rare and usually takes less than a minute.
Supporters App and Lumin App — through the app store
The mobile apps update through the App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android), the same way any phone app updates. Automatic updates are enabled by default in both stores. Manual updates can be triggered in the App Store or Play Store any time. Update notifications appear in the app if you're significantly behind. We recommend keeping automatic updates on.
Community Management Portal — server-side updates
The Portal is a web application — there's no download, nothing on your computer that needs updating. Updates roll out from the server; the next time a Portal user logs in, they get the current version. Major changes are announced via in-Portal banners or via Lumin Support. No browser version requirement beyond a modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari).
Platform infrastructure — continuous
The platform infrastructure itself (servers, integration layer, monitoring) is updated continuously by Lumin's technical team. Customers don't see these updates.
When something might go wrong
A CareHub update may fail to apply — Lumin monitors this and rolls back automatically. A new app version may have a bug — the next update from the store fixes it. The Portal may have a temporary issue — Lumin Support is alerted automatically. For all of these, the user doesn't usually need to do anything. Lumin's monitoring and operations handle the response.
Update frequency
Roughly: CareHub gets monthly updates with new features and improvements (security updates may go out sooner); Supporters App and Lumin App update every 2–4 weeks; Portal updates continuously with small server-side rolls; platform infrastructure is continuous. We don't push significant new features without notice. Major changes that change how users do things are accompanied by an in-app or in-Portal explanation, a Community Message in villages where relevant, and notes in this KB.
What if I want to know what's changed
Release notes for the CareHub and apps are available through Lumin Support on request.
